Things couldn't be worse for the New York Mets right now and it appears they may be without their ace for the rest of the season. Per Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the Mets are leaning towards shutting down Jacob deGrom for the rest of the year as the team continues to slide.

deGrom hasn't pitched since July 7th after enjoying a fantastic start to the campaign. Injuries have been his kryptonite though, dealing with a total of six different health issues throughout 2021. His latest elbow injury doesn't seem promising by any means, either.

The Mets star made 15 starts, going 7-2 with a ridiculous 1.08 ERA while striking out 146 hitters in 92 innings. He was in the midst of a historic season and it's a real shame injuries derailed it.

As for the Mets, they're currently 60-60 and a whole 4.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. New York has been atrocious since the All-Star Break and things won't get any easier with back-to-back series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

With the playoffs looking to be a long shot at this point given the number of injuries the team has dealt with, it does seem like the smart decision is to shut Jacob deGrom down and get him healthy for 2022.
