The New York Mets are gearing up for Opening Day on Thursday, when, despite the offseason acquisition of Max Scherzer, Taylor Megill will be on the mound. With Max Scherzer nursing a hamstring injury, the marquee signing was expected to make his Mets debut on Friday during their second game of the season. The latest update from Tim Healey, however, could throw a wrench in those plans. According to Healey, while Scherzer did get included on the Mets' Opening Day roster, manager Buck Showalter revealed the IL remains a possibility for the 37-year-old.

Scherzer was among the 14 pitchers that made the Mets' Opening Day roster, but that doesn't mean he's out of the woods just yet when it comes to his ailing hamstring. Showalter's surprise revelation that the right-hander could still be destined for a trip to the IL doesn't bode well for his status for Friday's game, though as of now he's still penciled in to take the mound against the Nationals, his former team.

Scherzer isn't the only one with a potential IL stay looming. Showalter also noted that Brandon Nimmo is in the same boat, having made the Opening Day roster but also dealing with an injury.

The Mets signed Scherzer this offseason on a massive three-year, $130 million deal. The expectation heading into the year was that the Mets would boast the most dangerous pitching staff in baseball. Injuries to Jacob deGrom and now possibly Scherzer have poured cold water on those dreams, and the Mets will surely be hoping for a more positive update on their star acquisition ahead of Friday's clash.
