The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals engaged in a benches-clearing brawl during their game Wednesday. Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado was buzzed up near his head, setting the whole thing off. He charged the mound, and then everyone including members from each bullpen in the outfield came sprinting in defense of their players.

During the melee, Cardinals first base coach Stubby Clapp appeared to tackle Mets superstar Pete Alonso. After the game, Alonso poured fuel on the fire with his comments to the media.

“Genesis Cabrera grabbed me by the back of the collar… then he ripped down and the coach kind of just got on top of me… I thought that was kind of cheap going from behind… if you want to restrain me, got at me like a man,” Alonso said. “For me, I'm a big strong guy, they don't know my temper, they don't know what I could do… If I wanted to put someone in the hospital I easily could.”

Frustration from the Mets had clearly been boiling over. Despite having played less than three weeks of baseball, the Mets have been hit by a major league-leading 19 pitches. The Cardinals hit three Mets' players on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday in the top of the 8th inning, Mets hitter J.D. Davis was hit in the foot. In the bottom half of the inning, Mets pitcher Yoan Lopez went up and in on Arenado. Arenado took exception, saying “do it again.” From there it was on.

There has been a lot being made of players being hit by pitches early this season. Mets starter Chris Bassitt has openly talked about the inconsistency of the baseballs themselves as being part of the problem. MLB declined to respond to his assertions.
