The New York Mets have owned the 2022 season so far. Despite injuries to their superstar pitchers, they have been dominating and are tied for the most wins in the National League. Team owner Steve Cohen loves what he sees but also learned the hard way how an early-season lead can evaporate.
Last season, in Cohen's first year of ownership, they were leading the NL East for over 100 days before finishing with a losing record. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Cohen is waiting a few months to feel truly excited but is still impressed with how much better the team looks.

This looks different. It’s still early. I am not going to get excited, because we know things can change. I will get excited in August.”
“Professional hitters,” Cohen said. “I think it’s infectious. It’s like night and day.”
The Mets' record of 35-19 currently has them 8.5 games ahead of the NL East. Spectacular hitting from Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor, who just matched team icon Mike Piazza in the record books, makes the Mets one of the very best offenses. Their pitching has remained strong despite Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom's absences.
The Mets still have a lot of the season ahead of them. With several more months of action remaining before the playoffs, New York will have to keep it up.
