The Tampa Bay Rays are looking to improve on their 2023 MLB postseason. The Rays nabbed an NL Wild Card spot but lost in the first round to the Texas Rangers. Now, Tampa Bay has made a splash in MLB Free Agency. The Rays set their sights on former Houston Astros reliever Chris Devenski.
The Rays bolster their pitching lineup with the services of Chris Devenski
Devenski and Tampa Bay agreed on a one a one-year contract with a club option, per Jeff Passan. The right-handed relief pitcher spent most of his career with the Astros. However, he was most recently with the Los Angeles Angels before originally signing with the Rays in August.
Tampa Bay chose to bring the veteran pitcher back as they attempt to improve their depth for the 2024 season. The Rays lead pitcher, Zach Eflin, had an impressive 2023 campaign. The 29-year-old boasted a W-L of 16-8, which ranked him 3rd in the MLB during the regular season.
In addition, Eflin had an ERA of 3.50, threw 42 strikeouts, and had a WHIP of 1.02 (2nd in the league). Bringing back Devenski adds much-needed support for Tampa Bay's star pitcher. The Rays were also impressive on the offensive front.
The Rays' three-headed monster of Randy Arozarena, Yandy Diaz, and Issac Parades had one of the best batting attacks in the league. Arozarena was a batting ironman, whose production expanded across 151 games. Diaz had the fourth-best batting average in the league (.330). Meanwhile, Parades was top 30 in home runs, RBI, and OPS.
Tampa Bay is good position as MLB Free Agency continues to heat up. Surely, the team will improve upon their already successful 2023 season.
