WhatsApp has dropped a new ad and staged a Modern Family reunion. The ABC sitcom originally aired from 2009-2020.
In a post on their social media platforms, WhatsApp shared the Modern Family reunion. It depicts the families making fun of Mitchell Pritchett’s (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) phone.
“Cross-device friction is real, IYKYK,” the caption reads. “Good thing we exist.”
The ad begins with Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) with Cam Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) sitting in the Dunphy’s living room. They are raving about a photo sent by Hailey Dunphy (Sarah Hyland) of her twins.
Mitchell overhears this and wants to see the photo before Phil says it’s in the group chat. However, Claire and Cam both give him a look, indicating her messed up. That is when Mitchell realizes they have a group chat without him.
After shaming them, Cam defends the decision. “It’s not you, it’s your new phone,” he says.
“Blurry photos, weird likes,” Claire adds.
That’s when someone painting the Dunphy’s house weighs in, suggesting they use WhatsApp for group chats with different phones.
The ad ends with Cam and Mitchell in bed. “I still can’t believe you cut me out,” Mitchell says.
“We may have cut you from here,” Cam says, pointing at the group chat before pointing at his heart and continuing, “But never from here.”
Modern Family reunion teases finally paid off
The WhatsApp ad finally reveals what Jesse Tyler Ferguson was teasing. In May 2024, Ferguson posted a photo from the Dunphy’s house set with the caption “Haven’t seen this view in a while.”
This sparked rumors that a Modern Family revival was coming. He further fueled the fire when he appeared on The Talk. He promised that “something” is coming out after his set photo.
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Ferguson’s on-screen daughter Lily in Modern Family, also added to the speculation. She posted a video with Ferguson around the same time on May 25.
It is clear that they remain close. In March 2024, Anderson-Emmons also posted a picture of her with Ferguson and Bowen. They attended her school play.
What is Modern Family?
Modern Family is a sitcom created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. The series depicts the lives of three intertwined diverse families connected by patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill). It is produced in mockumentary style akin to The Office
The original series aired from September 23, 2009 to April 8, 2020. 11 seasons and 250 episodes were produced in that span. All good things must come to end. The cast remains close and reunite every once in a while. Whether or not that leads to a formal reboot or revival remains to be seen.
Ed O’Neill led the Modern Family cast. He was previously previously known for his role on sitcom Married… with Children. In the series, he is married to Sofia Vergara’s Gloria. They make the Pritchett family along with Gloria’s son with her ex-husband, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), and her son with Jay, Joe (Jeremy Maguire).
The Dunphy family consists of Phil and Claire. Their kids are Haley, Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould). Towards the end of Modern Family, Haley has twins with Dylan Marshall (Reid Ewing).
Lastly, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet play Mitchell Pritchett and Cam Tucker. They have a daughter, Lily.
