Why The Grizzlies Could Cover The Spread

The Memphis Grizzlies have had a great start to the year. When many teams were struggling with COVID absences and injuries, the Grizzlies were making a run and racking up wins. Through the first half of the season, they have managed to go 35-17. The Grizzlies are rolling right now and will look to extend their win streak to four on Monday. Their most recent victory came against the Washington Wizards by 20. If Memphis can keep on playing solid basketball then they will have no problem competing against the best teams in the league.

The Grizzlies dominated the Wizards for two reasons, volume, and rebounding. In their win over Washington, Memphis took 100 shots from the field. For some perspective, the league average is right around 88. The Grizzlies significantly outpaced the league average and that led to a dominant victory. Additionally, Memphis absolutely cleaned up the boards. They grabbed 60 rebounds in that game, outrebounding Washington by 23. These two factors are what led to a lopsided victory and will continue to be keys to success for the Grizzlies. If they can mimic that performance on Monday then the Sixers are in trouble.

One of the biggest things that is helping the Grizzlies succeed is their lack of injuries. Currently, Memphis has only two players listed on their injury report, Dillon Brooks and Tyus Jones. Jones is listed as questionable for Monday's match and has been out due to COVID. If they can continue to run and not lose steam then they should have high expectations for the rest of the season. Memphis is legitimately one of the top teams in the league.

Why The 76ers Could Cover The Spread

The Philadelphia 76ers have had a rollercoaster of a year. They have certainly struggled at periods, but have come through it all on top. Through the first half of the season, they have managed to post a 30-19 record. Philly has had to battle with injuries and COVID, but have been on a run recently. The Sixers are coming off four straight victories, with their most recent win coming against the Sacramento Kings by two. Philly managed to squeak out that win, but they will need to step things up if they want to take down Memphis. Expect the Sixers to come out firing and trying to extend their win streak to five.

The Sixers were very close to coming up short against the Kings. Luckily for Philly, they were able to pull out the win in a tight fourth quarter. The Sixers should have won that game by more. Philadelphia only took 70 shots in that game but managed to convert over 51% of them. What they lacked in volume they made up for in efficiency. This is the exact opposite of what Memphis has shown. Additionally, the Sixers managed to get to the line 26 times in that game. These are just two of the reasons they came out ahead. If Philly wants to compete against Memphis they need to take more shots and kick their offense up a notch.

The face and leader of this Sixers team is without a doubt Joel Embiid. While the Sixers are healthy for the most part, it has been announced that the most important player on the team will be resting on Monday. This has huge implications for the outcome of the game. Without Embiid the Sixers lack a leader and dominant force. When Philly chooses to rest their big man they essentially are waiving the white flag for this matchup.

Final Grizzlies-76ers Prediction & Pick

This is an easy pick. Without Embiid the Sixers will struggle to compete with the Grizzlies. Memphis has been on a roll, and this match had the potential to be gritty and competitive. However, with Embiid resting, this will likely just be a lopsided victory for Memphis. Pick the Grizzlies to win and cover.
