Chicago Bulls head coach Jim Boylen told local reporters on Saturday that starting shooting guard Zach LaVine has swelling in his left ankle.

LaVine missed five games in December after injuring his left ankle in Mexico City against the Orlando Magic. The Bulls host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. It is unknown if LaVine is going to play or not.

In 43 games this season for the Bulls, Zach LaVine is averaging 23.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. The 23-year-old is shooting 45.2 percent from the field, 35.0 percent from beyond the arc and 86.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Bulls are 11-38 on the season. They are in the 13th spot in the Eastern Conference standings. The team has been a walking disaster all season, but Zach LaVine has been one bright spot. After only playing in 24 games last season because of ACL rehab, LaVine has been a model of consistency this season and has regained his athleticism.

There is no point to play LaVine on Sunday against the lowly Cavs if the high-flyer isn't 100 percent. The Bulls are headed for the lottery anyway. Risking the long-term health of LaVine for a meaningless game would be very shortsighted.

Chicago signed Zach LaVine to a four-year, $78 million contract last summer.
