Chicago Bulls fans expecting new executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley to overhaul the roster this offseason may be disappointed.
According to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago on a recent Bulls Talk Podcast, Karnisovas and Eversley like the Bulls' roster and are focused on why the talent in Chicago has underachieved:
“I don’t know Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley well enough to know exactly what all their future plans are,” Johnson said on a Bulls podcast.
“I will tell you in the conversations I have had with people that are in the know and just kind of the what’s going on around the team… my sense is that they like the roster. Now I’m not saying anybody’s untouchable, but they think that there’s talent on the roster and they’re more focused on why that talent underachieved as opposed to making major changes.”
The Bulls haven't won more than 27 games since trading Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer of 2017. While Zach LaVine has established himself as an electric scorer, the other two players the Bulls acquired in the Butler trade — Lauri Markkanen and Kris Dunn — have been inconsistent since arriving in Chicago.
Most Bulls fans believe Karnisovas and Eversley need to get another explosive scorer in the backcourt next to LaVine and fire head coach Jim Boylen for the team to start winning games again. LaVine becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2022, and there have been rumors that the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks are already doing their homework on a LaVine trade just in case the high-flyer requests a trade before the summer of 2022 arrives.
Bulls veteran forward Thaddeus Young could be traded this offseason since he's better suited to play for a contender at this stage of his career. Besides Young, though, it doesn't appear Chicago is going to look to trade many players moving forward.
