Including this Sunday night, there are six more episodes of “The Last Dance” set to air on ESPN airwaves over the next three weeks — with the final two set to drop on May 17. But director Jason Hehir says his epic docuseries isn't quite completed yet.

Contrary to the usual practice of having an entire series complete before it debuts, work on episode 9 was finished Friday and the final is scheduled to be done by May 10, as viewers watch episodes 7 and 8.
Hehir's 10-part series, chronicling Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls, was originally slated to drop in June, but was bumped up in order to fill a programming gap in the absence of live sports amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Hehir may be working hard until the last minute to deliver the completed version of his long-gestating documentary, but he and the folks at ESPN must be pleased with the adjusted release date. Interest in Jordan's story — and viewing any new sports content — is clearly soaring, as evidenced by the huge ratings “The Last Dance” has pulled.
The first two “Last Dance” episodes (aired Apr. 19) averaged a 6.1 rating across ESPN and ESPN2, while Episodes 3 and 4 averaged 5.9. Hehir's project has also surpassed Netflix's “Tiger King” as the world's most-viewed documentary.
