Chicago Bulls new vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas has tons of work to do in order to turn the franchise into a winner again.
Considering that the Bulls are still in rebuild mode, Karnisovas' best course of action is to get rid of Chicago's worst contracts and turn them into draft picks.
Karnisovas should look to trade Thaddeus Young and Tomas Satoransky whenever the 2020 offseason begins. Both players are making way too much money and would be better off playing for a contending team.
Young signed a three-year, $41 million deal with the Bulls last summer. Before the 2019-20 season got suspended, the 31-year-old forward appeared in 64 games for the team. He was putting up 10.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
Young is set to make $13,545,000 next season and then $14,190,000 in 2021-22, though only $6 million of that is guaranteed. The Los Angeles Clippers are said to be interested in the veteran. Maybe the Bulls and Los Angeles can work out a deal where Chicago gets the Clippers' 2022 second-round draft pick for Young.
Thaddeus was supposedly unhappy with his role and minutes under Bulls head coach Jim Boylen for most of the season. Don’t be surprised if Karnisovas tries to move him whenever the 2020-21 offseason begins, especially since the lefty just doesn't fit Chicago's plan moving forward.
On the other hand, Chicago was paying Satoransky $10 million this season. The Bulls signed him to a three-year, $30 million deal as a free agent in the summer of 2019. Before the 2019-20 campaign was suspended, Sato was averaging 9.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists for the club — numbers that won't get it done for a starting point guard in the NBA.
The Philadelphia 76ers are a team that needs more shooting and ball-handlers around All-Stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. Karnisovas could call the Sixers and offer Satoransky for the team's first-round pick in 2021.
Or, the new Bulls architect could reach out to the Detroit Pistons and offer Tomas for former Chicago superstar Derrick Rose.
Rose is on a team-friendly deal and way better than Satoransky. He averaged 18.1 points and 5.6 assists for the Pistons prior to play being suspended due to COVID-19 while making just $7,317,073. However, the Bulls might have to give up more than just Sato to get D-Rose since the Motor City franchise really values him.
Chicago has a number of assets they can use to rebuild the team, and it's certain that Karnisovas will be tested early once the offseason and free agency begins.
