Jamal Murray's contract extension with the Denver Nuggets is now the richest contract in Canadian sports as well as in franchise history, surpassing Nikola Jokic's.
Murray, who hails from Kitchener, Ontario, just agreed to a five-year, $170 million maximum contract extension with the Nuggets. The deal won’t take effect until the 2020-2021 season. But according to Lori Ewing of CBC, Murray is now the highest-paid Canadian athlete. He surpassed Minnesota Timberwolves' Andrew Wiggins who signed a five-year, $146.5 million max deal with no player option in 2017.
In addition, per Joel Rush of Forbes, the 22-year-old Murray now holds the biggest contract in Nuggets franchise history. To recall, Jokic recently inked a five-year, $148 million maximum contract.
“With Jamal Murray’s new max deal, which won’t kick in until the 2020-21 season, he will not only become the highest-paid Canadian player in history, according to a report by the CBC, but his contract is also the biggest in Nuggets franchise history with Murray taking that mantle from Jokic, who received the same honor a year ago.”
Last season, Murray was an intrinsic part of the Nuggets' 54-win season. He averaged 18.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.2 rebounds. He also shot 43.7 percent from the field and 36.7 percent from deep. Come the postseason, he put up more impressive numbers through 14 games: 21.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.4 rebounds.
The hefty contract extension simply means that the Nuggets have placed full confidence in Murray. While he has a lot to learn about the game, his performance over the past few seasons is a clear indication that he's hungry for success. They expect him to replicate and even improve upon the Nuggets 2018-2019 campaign.
