Kevin Durant has been mostly noncommittal to a return to the Golden State Warriors after this season concludes. Yet when pressed once again to give some insight as to what way he's leaning, the two-time Finals MVP finally caved… at least a bit.
“I’m not thinking about none of that s**t,” Kevin Durant said of his free agency plans after Wednesday’s night victory over the Washington Wizards, according to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic. “I’m really locked in with the team.”
“He lying,” Andre Iguodala blurted from the neighboring locker, interrupting Durant’s explanation as laughs ensued.
“I am thinking about the money I’m going to get,” Durant said. “I never got the (massive) deal. I’ve just seen a bunch of dudes around the league making so much money — and I’m happy for them. But I know I deserve that, too. That’s the only thing I’m probably thinking about, to be honest.”
Dissecting this latest quote only begs to think that Durant would wind up leaving, giving the precarious situation the Warriors are in financially.
Article Continues BelowDurant has been paid close to the max level (he took discounts in his first two seasons) despite signing nothing but one-and-one deals since joining Golden State in 2016, but the Warriors have two impending free agents to keep in Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
The former has been utterly vocal in his willingness to finish his career as a Warrior, but sources close to the team say the Warriors aren't necessarily expecting him to take a discount. Green is a far shot to stay, given that he'll turn 30 by the time he's up for a new deal, and his game and body have already shown signs of regression.
Keeping Durant on a max deal would most likely mean getting rid of both Thompson and Green, something that would effectively destroy the foundation upon which this team was built.
Teams like the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and the L.A. Clippers have enough cap space saved up to haul in a star like Durant next summer.
