Indiana Pacers swingman Lance Stephenson is trying to take over the crown as the sneaker king of the NBA. Though his latest sneaker snafu against the Los Angeles Lakers could cost him some reputation.

Stephenson wore a custom pair of Nike Air Huarache 2K4, one of the first shoes The Black Mamba wore with Nike after switching over from Adidas.

This pair eventually became detached, which forced a change of kicks for the 6-foot-5 dynamo, and it was quite the embarrassing moment.

“The shoes I bought… I didn't read the instructions, they was made in 2004 and was not to be played in,” said Stephenson. “So I just took it upon myself to still play in it, because it's such a good shoe, I didn't think it was gonna break.”

“Kobe, don't get mad at me for wearing your shoe and messing it up. I was told not to wear it and I still wore it.”

This wouldn't be the first time Stephenson has proved stubborn during his playing career, as he admitted he's trying to catch up to the sneaker addicts like P.J. Tucker of the Houston Rockets, who reportedly never wears the same pair twice.

Shoes like the Huarache, will have the glue applied between the midsole dry up over time, causing it to detach (my old pair of original Melo 1.5, also released in 2004, can attest to this very problem).
