Los Angeles Lakers superstar small forward LeBron James has created a new organization aimed at not just increasing African American voter registration and turnout, but also voter education and voting rights protection.

The Lakers star welcomed a whole slew of athletes to the voting rights cause on Wednesday:

Because he's arguably the most popular athlete in the world, LeBron James was able to recruit other stars from various sports to try to stir up African American voter engagement in select markets, mostly in swing states. The Lakers forward got Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green in Michigan, Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young in Atlanta and WNBA star Skylar Diggins-Smith in Phoenix.

LeBron, who helped open a school last year in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, will never “shut up and dribble.”

“Hopefully, someday down the line, people will recognize me not only for the way I approached the game of basketball, but the way I approached life as an African American man,” James told the New York Times.

James and the Lakers will resume the 2019-20 season on July 30 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Los Angeles has the best record in the Western Conference and a good shot of winning the 2020 title. Both LeBron and Anthony Davis were playing at an MVP level before games were suspended in March.

Prior to the season getting suspended, James was averaging 25.7 points, 7.9 boards and 10.6 assists in 60 games for the Lakers.
