Before the NBA trade deadline last week, the Los Angeles Lakers made a blockbuster deal in which the team acquired two veterans in exchange for two young players on the rise. One of the two veterans is Luke Walton's former teammate at Arizona, Channing Frye.

Although Frye isn't expected to play a prominent role with the Lakers in the second half of the 2017-18 campaign, the sharpshooting forward/center gives the team an interesting dynamic. Frye's shooting ability, paired with other threats from outside like Kyle Kuzma, gives the Lakers spacing that they haven't had all season long and Walton is anxious to see what it can do for the team as he said after Tuesday's practice.

“Channing [Frye] is someone that could really stretch the floor for us,” Walton said. “I'm interested in getting him and Kuz on the court together as a four, five. Play with that type of spacing. He's a veteran that is going to be great in the locker room. He already is. The guy never shuts up, but it's always positive, and it's always trying to help younger guys. He's given tips throughout the entire practice. Just a great guy to have around and I'm excited to get him out there, too. Like I said, space the floor and see what that can't do for our group.”

Frye is a career 38.7 percent shooter from beyond the arc. Although he's not the same player or threat he once was from deep, the veteran is still an upgrade in that category for the Lakers. The 34-year-old is currently shooting 33.3 percent from the three-point line and may have his chance to improve that in Luke's system if given the minutes.

Kuzma has been slightly better than Frye from three-point range this season at 36.2 percent. Josh Hart (39.2%), Brandon Ingram (39.3%), and Isaiah Thomas (50%) are currently ahead of Kuzma in terms of percentage, but the rookie forward has almost three more attempts from deep per game.

It will be interesting to see how the addition of Frye and Thomas helps spread the floor for the Lakers as this team tries to get back on track after having their four-game win streak snapped this past weekend against the Dallas Mavericks. Los Angeles will play two more games on the road before heading into the All-Star break this weekend.
