The Los Angeles Lakers have been up and down this season, currently in decent playoff position in the Western Conference coming out of the All-Star break. This comes amid reporting on some of the drama behind the scenes in Los Angeles, with a recent article from ESPN exposing some intense family animosity between Governor Jeanie Buss and her siblings.
Buss recently orchestrated the sale of the Lakers to businessman and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter last year, and now, the daughter of Jerry Buss is speaking on why she thinks her father would be on board with the decision to sell.
“What was important to him was that the Lakers stay at the top of the NBA, and to stay at the top of the NBA, you need to have the resources,” Buss said, per Baxter Holmes of ESPN, via CNBS. “You need to have everybody pulling together. And he would want [that for] the Lakers, because the Lakers are his legacy.”
The Lakers indeed became synonymous with Dr. Jerry Buss during his stint as the team's owner, establishing themselves as the most successful franchise in the NBA landscape by a wide margin.
Unfortunately, Los Angeles hasn't been at the top of the NBA for quite some time, with no playoff wins to its credit since the 2023 season, but they are hoping to change that sooner rather than later now that Luka Doncic is in the fray.
“The partnership will give us the stability to continue to move forward as we build towards a team around Doncic,” Buss said. “We couldn't be more proud that he is a Laker. He is a young All-Star that the fans love to see.”
While Jeanie Buss' siblings may not see things the same way she does, it seems that Dr. Buss' daughter is comfortable with the decision to sell the team.
