Earlier today, Dallas Mavericks rising star point guard Dennis Smith Jr. opened up to Mavs.com beat reporter Dwain Price about an experience he had back in the day with Los Angeles Lakers forward Brandon Ingram when they were both in middle school.
“DSJ said as an 8th grader and playing a game against Brandon Ingram, he sprained his ankle, kept playing and also played the next day,” Price said.
That definitely takes the heart of a fierce competitor, to say the least, going back to his days with Ingram back in North Carolina. However, Smith Jr. had an unfortunate stroke of bad luck once in the long run and he attributes it to his early ankle issues.
“I'm limping on it. I lost a lot of mobility in it. So then my knee tried to compensate for it and that's how I ended up tearing my ACL,” Smith Jr. said.

Smith Jr. suffered a torn ACL during his junior year in high school, which resulted in the devastating injury forcing him to miss his entire senior season while he recovered.
Ingram continues to deal with injury issues of his own this season, as the rising star forward has missed the Lakers' last nine games dating back to March 1st due to a groin injury.
As for Smith Jr. this 2017-18 season, the rookie guard has put up some very impressive numbers in a down season for the Mavs. In 61 starts, he is currently averaging a respectable 15.0 points on 39.0 percent shooting from the field, 4.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.
