As teams continue to wheel and deal ahead of the trade deadline, some are planning to stay put and wait for the offseason to possibly make some moves. One of them are the Dallas Mavericks, who are reportedly opting to keep their assets intact for the remainder of the season.
The Mavs do have options to trade for expiring deals and second rounders to cut down their losses, especially with their campaign looking like another lost one. However, they are apparently placing more value on having enough cap space to make a splash in the future, according to Eddie Sefko of Dallas News.
Hearing the Mavericks are weighing the pain vs. the gain of taking back big salaries. So far, per source, they are disinclined to take back late seconds with a heavy contract for any of their assets. Cap space more valuable. Details coming.

With the Mavs in need of some key pieces to become a contender once again, the cap flexibility they are prioritizing will come in handy when they make a move for a big name free agent and other players who they believe will fit in well in their system and future plans.
They do have a promising young rookie in Dennis Smith Jr. who can be one of their cornerstones, along with Harrison Barnes. Acquiring a solid big man or shooting guard, plus some help off the bench is definitely the first order of business for the franchise, and they can use the draft in June or summer's free agency to address some of their needs.
The Mavs' front office executives, as well as their owner, Mark Cuban, are very knowledgeable when it comes to how the business side works and they surely have a plan in place to put Dallas in the best possible position to return to their glory days soon.
