Towns lost eight family members to the disease. And Towns himself received treatment at a hospital in 2021 with severe symptoms. He has been honest about his family's losses, appearing on an episode of “Peace of Mind with Taraji” on Facebook Watch earlier this year. The episode offered a glimpse into Towns' struggle with grief and survivor's guilt, and how the day he lost his mother changed his outlook on life.

A star for the Timberwolves since being drafted first overall in 2015, Towns led the team to just their second playoff appearance since 2003-04 this season. Towns averaged 24.6 points and 9.8 rebounds during the regular season, and shot over 40% from three. His best performance of the year came on March 14th, when Towns scored a franchise-record 60 points in a win. March 14th marked exactly two years since Towns' mother was admitted to the hospital.
As the Timberwolves prepare for a playoff run, today offers a somber reminder of the adversity that Karl-Anthony Towns has had to overcome to reach this point.
