According to several official reports, Towns was involved in a car accident last week, which led to his concussion. He was held out of Friday's game against the Knicks, ending his streak of 303 consecutive games started. The former No. 1 overall pick was cleared to travel with the team to Milwaukee for Saturday's game, but he did not play.
Article Continues BelowTowns was a passenger in a car driven by Timberwolves assistant strength and conditioning coach Kurt Joseph; the two were en route to the airport to catch the team's flight for Friday's road game against the New York Knicks.
As traffic slowed in the area, a semi hit the vehicle from behind, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. Towns declined medical attention for a minor injury and later took a commercial flight to join the team in New York.
Towns wasn't upset about his streak of consecutive starts coming to an end. In fact, it was just the opposite, according to Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders.
“People asked me if he cared about his [consecutive-games] streak,” Saunders told ESPN. “He hasn't and didn't mention one thing along those lines. It was all about being there for his teammates and contributing. He even had somebody run out and make sure he could get a sport coat so he was dressed properly on the bench so he could be there with his teammates. That says a lot about Karl.”
Towns is enjoying a fine season with the Timberwolves. In 57 appearances, the crafty big man has racked up averages of 23.1 points on 51.2 percent shooting from the field (38.9 percent from beyond the arc), 12.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, and just under one steal (0.9) in 33.1 minutes per outing.
Monday night's Timberwolves-Kings game is scheduled to tip inside the Target Center at 8:00 p.m. ET.
