According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis is set to make a whole lot of money in a year's time. Thanks to the league's âSupermaxâ rule, the 25-year-old could potentially sign a record-breaking $235 million extension with the Pelicans next season.
As it turns out, there are seven other players in the league that will be eligible to sign supermax extensions within the next few years. Namely, they are Klay Thompson and Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers, Kemba Walker of the Charlotte Hornets, Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns, and lastly, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
In layman's terms, the supermax rule is a stipulation that allows teams to offer their own players more money than what other teams are allowed to. This simply means that a player entering free agency (provided that he meets the stern criteria of the supermax deal) would be able to sign a significantly bigger contract with his old/current team as compared to if he were to sign with a different team.

However, it may pose as a problem for teams that are unable to stay within the NBA's salary cap. Take for instance the Warriors. With Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant already on monster contracts, it would be impossible for them to sign both Thompson and Green to supermax extensions, should they become eligible. In order for them to keep their current roster in tact, one or two guys will need to take a lot less money than they actually can.
With this much players potentially becoming eligible to sign supermax extensions in the near future, it would not be surprising to witness jaw-dropping, never-before-seen figures within the next couple of seasons.
