With the end of the 2017-18 NBA season just around the corner, the New Orleans Pelicans are doing what they can to remain in the upper half of the Western Conference Playoff picture. They managed to keep their recent momentum going with a nailbiter over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night.
The Pelicans had been trading punches with the Lakers before they were finally able to seal the game in the closing seconds. Their victory at the Smoothie King Center marked the first time any team has won three straight home games since the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979, per Elias Sports.
According to Elias Sports, the Pelicans became the first team to win home games on 3 consecutive days since the SuperSonics (Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, 1979).
Needless to say, they have been led by the efforts of big man Anthony Davis. The Pelicans' star put on another stellar performance in the 128-125 win over the Lakers with 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting. He also managed to record nine rebounds, two blocks, and three steals in the process — including the game-sealing steal on Thursday.
The Pelicans took a tremendous hit with the loss of center DeMarcus Cousins for the season. However, Davis has managed to shoulder the load once again en route to an MVP-caliber year. During that three-game stretch, he has registered 98 points, 30 rebounds, and nine blocks.
Outside of the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors, the two remaining spots with home-court advantage are still up for grabs in the Western Conference Playoffs. Fortunately, their recent spurt has helped put them in the driver's seat with nine games left in the season.
