New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis has been the focus of a rumor storm surrounding him, as his team has struggled to battle for playoff contention in a ruthless West. The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics are rumored to make a run at Davis at some point, with the former having the unique advantage of potentially trading for him before the deadline, given that Boston already traded for a designated player in Kyrie Irving.

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry did his best to blow those rumors to waste, sending one last loud and clear statement:

“We’re not trading him,” said Gentry, according to Steve Aschburner of NBA.com “I can say that to the world. We’re not gonna trade him, no matter what. That’s not an option. It doesn’t matter what anybody says or does. We’re not trading Anthony Davis.”

New Orleans is hellbent on retaining Davis and has tried to do so by putting potentially helpful pieces around him like Julius Randle, Elfrid Payton and Nikola Mirotic, who was acquired last season.

They will need Davis to have any remote shot at qualifying for the postseason, but their 15-17 record has them sitting in 13th place, yet still only two games away from the last seed in a merciless Western Conference.

The Pelicans will need to prove to Davis that his loyalty is not in vain, but rather a wise choice for a team with a chance to compete for a title. So far, the Pels have looked anything but that, and they will need to swing for the fences if they hope to keep Davis from the prying eyes of the Celtics and Lakers.
