After signing with the New York Knicks on a very lucrative contract, Joakim Noah is expected to provide a lot of toughness inside the paint and become their defensive anchor.

However, the 6-foot-11 big man feels that he's now a step slower on defense since he has not played a lot of games yet after being forced to miss 43 games last season with the Chicago Bulls. He has battled different injuries throughout his nine-year career and has only played more than 70 games in a season three times.

Noah discussed his current condition and how he thinks he will fare once the season starts. He also understands what he needs to do to make an impact on his new team. Per Al Iannazzone of Newsday:

“Right now I feel a step slow defensively. I have to do better. I have to do better for this ballclub. We all do.”

“I feel like I haven't played in a long time. I just have to get my steps, get my first step back and it will come. It will come.”

His head coach, Jeff Hornacek, echoed his starting center's thoughts. He also believes Noah can get back to how he was before during his earlier years in Chicago where he was considered one of the best defensive centers in the NBA.

“Jo just kind of got back to practicing here again about a week ago, so he's continuing to get in better shape. But his enthusiasm, his energy level kind of inspires all of our guys when he's out there.

“Since he got hurt a little I think he maybe took a little step back but he's getting it back. But we want him to kind of be the guy patrolling back there. (If) somebody gets beat, that he's there protecting us. I'm sure he'll get there.”

If the Knicks want to live up to the expectations set on them, they will need a healthy Joakim Noah to man the paint and change a lot of shots. Should he stay healthy this season and play like how he did in the past, it will certainly be a big boost to his squad who are looking to contend in the Eastern Conference and make waves this year.
