Dennis Smith Jr. was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Trey Burke to the Dallas Mavericks.
Ironically enough, the trade occurred just a day after the Mavs traveled to Madison Square Garden for a regular season contest. They beat the Knicks by a score of 114-90.

Smith has very much been in the shadow of Luka Doncic this season. Their games don't match together in the backcourt, as both players need the ball to be successful. Smith Jr. isn't much of an off-ball scorer or spot-up shooter as well.
Just a few weeks ago, the team had benched him and it seemed he was destined to be traded. Now that he's with the Knicks, he has the chance to be the full focus on offense. This will allow him to develop his overall game.
Smith, this season, has averaged 13.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from beyond the arc.
