In what can only be described as a fitting gesture, the Oklahoma City Thunder have decided to honor the rich Native American culture in and around the city with a unique City Edition uniform from Nike.
There are several notable design features incorporated into Oklahoma City's new CE jerseys, starting with the color. Carson Brown, a graphic designer with Nike, says he chose turquoise as the uniform's primary color due to its importance in Native American culture. To many tribes, turquoise is a symbol of friendship.
A stripe runs diagonally across the front of the new kits, which is meant to represent the Oklahoma River. The stripe points to the east — one of the most important directions in Native American culture.
The logo on the belt of OKC's new CE jerseys was inspired by the four corners of the Native American medicine wheel. The squares (or diamonds) seen around it are representative of a traditional ceremony sash.

According to an official report from the team, the Thunder will wear the new CE uniform for the first time on Wednesday, Nov. 14, vs. the New York Knicks at home. All in all, OKC is scheduled to wear the uniform at least six times at Chesapeake Energy Arena this season.
Nike and the Thunder have created a great tribute to Native American culture in this latest design. For hundreds of years, Oklahoma has been influenced and inhabited by indigenous nations. Thunder vice president Brian Byrnes says he is pleased to honor that storied heritage.
“More than just a uniform, this is a statement of our pride in the Native American culture that is so rich and vibrant in the fabric of Oklahoma,” Byrnes said in an official statement. “We are honored to have worked with Nike to develop a design that in so many ways captures and celebrates the influence of our state’s Native American communities.”
The Thunder will be back in action on Thursday night, when they'll travel to Charlotte for a matchup against the Hornets. Tip-off inside the Spectrum Center is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
