When Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul secured a monster contract with the Houston Rockets at the age of 33, it seemed like a given that he would exercise the massive $44.2 million player option for 2021-22. After all, regardless of the sport, how often would a 36-year-old see that kind of payday?
However, Paul turning down his player option for one last long-term deal has seemed to become well, an option, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
But for Chris Paul, he is focusing his eyes on the present and has expressed his love in playing for the Suns:
Article Continues BelowâI mean first and foremost, I love it here,â Paul said when asked about the option and whether Phoenix might be his final NBA stop. âI donât know how many years Iâve got left. I donât really think about that either. I feel too good.â
âSeriously, this summer, I have no clue. As much as Iâm involved in the union and stuff like that, I donât know what anybodyâs teams are, (what their) caps are, I donât know none of that stuff. I just play. And like I say, Iâm lucky to have my brother, my brother who helps. I focus on playing.â
Chris Paul has this uncanny ability to make every team he plays on better. He made the New Orleans Hornets relevant and enjoy a couple of seasons of playoff basketball. Paul led the way for the Lob City Los Angeles Clippers and made life easier for Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. Had the injury bug been absent, Paul and James Harden could have won a ring together with the Houston Rockets. The young and rebuilding Oklahoma City Thunder somehow made the postseason with Paul at the helm. Phoenix has been the latest beneficiary of Paul.
Suffice to say, at his age, Chris Paul is still one of the most desirable floor generals in the league. We'll see if he hits free agency and becomes one of the top options on the market.
