Besides the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers, the Phoenix Suns are also reportedly interested in All-Star guard D'Angelo Russell.
On paper, the idea of pairing D'Lo with Devin Booker is exciting. However, as Zach Lowe mentioned in his podcast, this is something that's very unlikely because of the Suns' cap space limitations.
“When the dust all settles, the Suns with Kelly Oubre’s cap hold — and Kelly Oubre is a decent young player, the Suns should want to keep Kelly Oubre — have I think $14-15 million in room. Not enough for D’Angelo Russell, who they have openly coveted. … Maybe enough for Patrick Beverley, but not enough for a max free agent.”
Russell is expected to command a salary that's close to $25 million per year. Not a lot of teams can offer the 23-year-old All-Star that kind of money, and the Suns will definitely not be an option for him.
Article Continues BelowThe Nets and Lakers can offer Russell the max contract — or something that's close to it — and the one advantage they have against the Suns or any other teams that are interested in the 6-foot-5 guard is the chance to win now. Brooklyn is already a playoff team and has the potential to take the next step with all the cap space they have.
On the other hand, LA already has LeBron James and Anthony Davis. They are just looking for that third star to team with those two.
The Suns? Well, they are still rebuilding and that might not change anytime soon.
