Kevon Looney was nearly destined to be a wash after this 2017-18 season, barring a complete transformation of his game. One offseason's worth of work and 20 pounds lighter, Looney has become one of the most used reserves for the Golden State Warriors, despite the team choosing not to pick up his option earlier in the season.
His averages of 3.9 points and 3.2 rebounds won't speak too loudly, but his night-to-night performances this season have been pivotal for an otherwise struggling bench unit.
Most recently, Looney had six points, six rebounds, four blocks, and a steal against the Phoenix Suns in 19 minutes — all from a player that has absolutely no plays run for him at the offensive end.
Article Continues BelowLooney is bound to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and as much as the Warriors would like to keep him around, they know it won't be long until a team comes calling.
“They always tell me if somebody comes and gives me a better offer, you should take it. But this is a team where it’s all about winning,” Looney said, according to Mark Medina of the San Jose Mercury News. “I’d love to be here and be a part of this. It’s something to think about, for sure.”
Looney was inserted into the starting lineup during the All-Star drought in March and flourished with the extra minutes, but has understood his minutes (and everyone else's) will fluctuate as Steve Kerr plays the matchup game.
“You don’t feel like he’s just doing it to me. He does it to everybody,” Looney said of Kerr. “There’s nobody that gets special treatment. If somebody is playing well in stretches, you go to them. But you always know your time is going to come.”
