Everyone knew the Jacksonville Jaguars would take Clemson's Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL draft. Few knew the Jags would take Clemson's Travis Etienne later in the first round. Plenty of people surely wondered if this was the first time a quarterback-running back tandem in the same backfield was picked by the same team in the first round of the draft.

The answer? Yes. This is the first time two college teammates in the same backfield — QB and RB — have been picked in the first round of the same NFL draft. The Jaguars — and two Clemson stars — have made NFL history.

The first NFL draft occurred in 1936, meaning that in 84 previous years of draft history, a quarterback and running back from the same school had not been picked by the same team in the first round.

It might seem natural that this had never previously occurred, in part because college football used to be a running back-dominated sport (through the early 1980s) but then became a quarterback-dominated sport. Having an elite passer and runner at the same time doesn't easily happen; having both players taken not only in the same draft, but in the first round, is extremely unlikely. The Jaguars know this.

Yet, as you look around at the 2021 NFL draft, you will see that former college teammates are being reunited in several NFL cities: Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase of LSU with the Cincinnati Bengals; Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle of Alabama with the Miami Dolphins; Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith of Alabama with the Philadelphia Eagles. Lawrence and Etienne of the Jaguars are little different from those other combinations; they simply were part of the same draft class instead of being separated by one or two years.

It's a remarkable piece of NFL history the Jaguars have created at the 2021 NFL draft. Now we will see how much NFL history these Clemson teammates can create on the field.
