Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees is opening up about his desire to be a professional sports broadcaster again. Brees is asking for a second chance behind the microphone, working for a NFL game production.

“SNF, MNF or Thursday Night Football. Come get me when you’re ready! Until then I’m coaching ball,” Brees said, per Awful Announcing. The former Super Bowl winning quarterback worked briefly at NBC on their college football broadcasts. He was also in the studio for some of the network's pro football programming.

Brees' broadcasting career

The former NFL quarterback worked only one season at NBC, after his retirement. That came in 2021. He worked alongside Mike Tirico for Notre Dame football games that year. On NBC's Sunday Night Football in America program, Brees also worked as a studio analyst that season.

When Brees left the network in 2022, it seemed the parting was amicable. NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua said at the time that the former quarterback wanted some time with his family, that his job wouldn't allow.

“The unbelievable busyness of an NFL career and then really not taking a break at all and launching right in with us with both Notre Dame football and the NFL, it was certainly an around-the-clock assignment,” Bevacqua said to the Associated Press in 2022, and reported by Canal Street Chronicles. “This was definitely a lifestyle choice for him, which is totally understandable.”

After leaving broadcasting, Brees did exactly that. He has been coaching his son's 7-on-7 football team, per Awful Announcing. The former Saints quarterback also worked as an assistant coach at Purdue in 2022. Brees played his college football at Purdue, from 1997-2000.

Brees is certainly qualified for a broadcasting job. He retired from the NFL in 2020 after posting some of the best numbers of any quarterback to ever play the game. Brees won a Super Bowl with the Saints, in the 2009 season. In his career, he threw for more than 80,000 yards. He also has the most 5,000 yard career passing NFL seasons, with five.

The quarterback holds multiple league records. This includes the highest completion percentage in a NFL season, with a 74.4 percent completion rate in the 2018 campaign. He was also the Super Bowl MVP during his championship run on that 2009 campaign. Brees made 13 Pro Bowls during his tenure in the league, and was twice named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. That came in 2008, and 2011. In his career, Brees played in New Orleans and with the San Diego Chargers.

There are several former NFL quarterbacks who have gone on to work in broadcasting. This includes Tony Romo, Ron Jaworski and Troy Aikman, to name a few. Time will tell if Brees gets another shot in the broadcast booth, and many people certainly hope he does get that chance.
