Why The Patriots Could Win

The Patriots quarterback battle is one of the most intriguing positional battles in all of football this season. Now two years removed from the Tom Brady dynasty era, the Patriots have a very tough decision to make. Do they go with veteran and former league MVP Cam Newton? Or do they go with rookie quarterback and former Alabama star Mac Jones? So far, it appears that if Jones might be the leader in this battle. He went 13-for-19 last week with 146 passing yards. Newton went 8-for-9 with 103 passing yards and a passing touchdown.

Newton also missed a few days away from practice this past week though, allowing Jones more time under center as the starter during practice. Going into this matchup against the Giants, the competition remains wide open. My guess is that both Newton and Jones receive a similar amount of snaps this game, as the coaching staff has a decision to make as soon as possible. Using this game as one last opportunity to prove their candidacy for the starting job, both Newton and Jones excel in giving the Patriots an easy win. Ultimately, I think Jones wins the battle though and is named the Week 1 starter. Is this the beginning of a new dynasty in New England?

Why The Giants Could Win

The Giants really do not have much to play for here. Not only is their starting quarterback already set in stone (Daniel Jones), but the backup job is pretty much set as well (Mike Glennon). The veteran quarterback has had some previous success with the Buccaneers, Bears, and Jaguars and now joins a Giants team that is in need of a solid veteran presence to mentor the young quarterback Jones. Glennon knows the backup job is his, which may mean he won’t play much here though. Brian Lewerke is a 24-year old quarterback out of Michigan State and threw for 108 yards and a touchdown last week against Cleveland. He hasn’t had much of a shot yet in the NFL but could use this primetime game against the Pats as an opportunity to prove himself to the Giants (or possibly even to another organization) heading into the regular season.

If Lewerke continues to play well here, combined with a few solid drives from Glennon, the Giants could put up 20+ points on a Pats defense resting most of their starters. However, it will take a letdown from either Mac Jones or Cam Newton for the Patriots to lose grip of this game. But if that does happen, look for the Giants to take advantage and steal a win from the Pats. If that does happen too, then it will also help the Pats in their quarterback battle as one of their options faltering in this game will make the starter decision easier to call.

Final Patriots-Giants Prediction & Pick

The Patriots quarterback situation gives them an edge here as they’ll likely be competitive for most or all of these 60 minutes of football. The Giants' backup defense will be no match for Newton or Jones, who can easily put up 20-25 points in this game for the Pats. The Giants will only keep this game close with a really poor performance from one of the Pats' two quarterbacks, which I do not envision happening. Patriots by at least a touchdown.

FINAL PICK: Patriots MONEYLINE (-170)
