Change is very likely on the way for the Washington Commanders this offseason. The most expected move is firing head coach Ron Rivera but general manager Martin Mayhew could also be shown the door.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mayhew's future with the team “is also in doubt, sources say, though that decision might not be made immediately. Expect the Commanders to explore a modified front office structure that more closely resembles other sports, with a president of football operations-type overseeing the head coach and GM.”

Firing Rivera, a move expected to occur soon, would likely be the first of many that would reshuffle the deck for new team owner Josh Harris. The Commanders are wrapping up the season that saw them trade away key players at the trade deadline. Their record heading into Week 18 is a meager 4-12.

Mayhew joined the Commanders in 2021 as their general manager after eight years as the general manager of the Detroit Lions. Still operating under the name “Football Team” when he arrived and fresh off of a playoff berth, Washington is about to miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season and finish last in the NFC East for the second time in a row.

Amid the turbulent last few years of the Commanders' ownership under Dan Snyder that resulted in a sale to Harris, Mayhew and the front office added a few decent pieces in the draft in third-round pick Brian Robinson Jr. and first-rounder Jahan Dotson, both of whom were picked in 2022. But otherwise, the track record is less than ideal, especially at the quarterback spot, which included gambles on Carson Wentz and 2022 fifth-round pick Sam Howell.

Now with some added draft capital heading into the 2024 draft, the Commanders will set the groundwork for their future soon after their final game of the 2023 season against the Dallas Cowboys. Harris' first season owning the team was a feel-out period that he hopes can set a foundation for an era of competitive football in the nation’s capital. Whether Mayhew retains his position or not, there is a lot of work to do.
