Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz recently agreed on a deal to sign with the Los Angeles Rams, due to injuries in their QB room. Wentz hasn't played a snap since 2022, but his name had been mentioned all season as a potential replacement for injured quarterbacks. The New York Jets could have been the team to sign Wentz, but they decided to stick with an in-house player in Zach Wilson. Wentz's party reportedly reached out to the Jets following their recent loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, but New York was uninterested, per Ian Rapoport at NFL Network.

Why did Jets pass on Carson Wentz?

Rams sign Carson Wentz amid Matthew Stafford injury

The Jets have been dealing with quarterback issues all year, having star quarterback Aaron Rodgers go down with a torn Achilles in Week 1, forcing them to ride with the turnover-prone Wilson. This seemed to provide a perfect scenario for Wentz, being able to come into a roster that was supposed to be ready to compete in the postseason with Rodgers, but the Jets never liked the marriage that could have been.

After Wentz's camp spoke with the Jets on multiple occasions, it was time to make a move and get him active. Wentz is in a talented quarterback room with Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett, but right now he's the healthiest option. Stafford is currently dealing with a thumb injury, while Bennett was placed on the non-football-related reserve list early this season.

Wentz recorded some abysmal numbers in his sole season with the Washington Commanders, recording 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in eight games played. He'll work to resurrect his career with head coach Sean McVay and an offense that has been pretty friendly to quarterbacks who like to sling the ball downfield.
