The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with a lucrative five-year, $137.5 million contract with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo that will make him the highest paid player at his position.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the deal also reportedly includes a unique no-trade clause once it reaches the fourth year of the contract.
Garoppolo deal has no-trade clause in 4th year of deal. Smart move by agent. If he's cut after:
1yr – $50.1M
2yrs – $61.2M
3yrs – $86.4M— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) February 9, 2018
It is clear that Garoppolo had the upper hand in working out a deal on his terms that would provide him much job security and the pay scale of being the top quarterback in the league. He is set to ink a deal that has $74 million in guaranteed money while this no-trade clause will give him the control of staying San Francisco without any possible way of being forced out if things went sour at that point in time.
That said, Garoppolo has brought much optimism to the 49ers that had been lacking over the last few seasons. He has quickly become the unquestioned leader of the offense and earned much respect from his teammates in the process. Six-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Joe Staley had voiced earlier this week that the 49ers are “good hands” with the 26-year-old under center for the next several seasons.
In his brief time with San Francisco, Garoppolo led the 49ers to wins in each of his first five starts while passing for 1,542 yards, the most by a quarterback in franchise history over that span. He also became the first 49ers quarterback since 1970 to win each of his first three road starts. During that stretch, it had become clear that Garoppolo has earned full command of the offense while elevating the play of his teammates.
With an entire offseason to get further acclimated to the offense and a large amount of financial flexibility that the front office will have at their disposal, it could see the franchise turn it around in 2018.
