Apparently, there is some hope that the Atlanta Falcons can reach a new deal with defensive lineman Grady Jarrett after all.
Earlier on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that it seemed unlikely that the Falcons would be able to come to an agreement with Jarrett before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Monday afternoon, but now, Schefter is reporting that there may be a happy ending.
Schefter says there are “no assurances,” but that both sides are working to try and make it happen.
Atlanta placed a franchise tag on Jarrett earlier this offseason. He is scheduled to make $15.1 million in 2019.
Jarrett is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 14 games and registered 52 tackles, six sacks and three forced fumbles.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Clemson University, was originally selected by the Falcons in the fifth round (137th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Article Continues BelowHe appeared in 15 contests during his rookie year, logging 25 tackles in a reserve role. Then, the following year, Jarrett became a full-time starter, participating in all 16 games and totaling 48 tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery.
The Conyers, Ga. native then went on to play every game in 2017 and continued his steady improvement, finishing with 55 tackles and four sacks.
Atlanta won just seven games in 2018 and missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.
The Falcons made it all the way to the Super Bowl in 2016-17 before famously blowing a 28-3 lead in an overtime loss to the New England Patriots.
