The Atlanta Falcons had a mediocre-at-best 2021-2022 season. They went 7-10, finished third in the NFC South, and failed to earn a spot in the playoffs. This offseason, the team is working hard this offseason to strengthen its roster ahead of the upcoming season.

Most recently, the Falcons secured Grady Jarrett for another three years. NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted the details on the contract extension Tuesday morning.

As reported by Rapoport, Jarrett's extension is a three-year, $51 million deal. According to Spotrac, it includes $34.5 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $17 million. The defensive end will earn a base salary of $16.5 million in 2022 while carrying a cap hit of $23,833,000. Despite the huge payday for Jarrett, this deal actually lowers the cap number for the Falcons.

This is a huge move for Atlanta. Jarrett is a key contributor to the Falcons' defense. He also provides a sense of leadership entering his eighth season in the NFL. In 2021, Jarrett recorded 59 tackles (38 solo, 21 assisted, and three for loss), one sack, and one pass deflection. The two-time Pro Bowler has been with the Falcons since he was drafted by Atlanta back in 2015.

Jarrett's extension comes just a few days after the 2022 NFL Draft. The Falcons acquired defensive pieces with their second and third picks over the weekend, securing edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie and linebacker Troy Andersen. The rookies will fit in with the Falcons' defense perfectly under the leadership of Jarrett and veteran cornerback Casey Hayward.
