The Atlanta Falcons have been playing like they are still hungover from Super Bowl LI. Atlanta enters Week 14 with a 3-9 record. To put it in perspective, that is the same record as the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins.
The Falcons are a team that makes people wonder how they are bad. Julio Jones is a top receiver in the league. Austin Hooper has turned into a strong tight end and Devonta Freeman has been good throughout his career. When a team goes south, the quarterback is immediately thrown under the bus. In this case, it is unfair.
Matt Ryan has been a top 10 quarterback in the NFL for quite some time. He has eight seasons over 4,000 yards passing. He has an MVP award and a Super Bowl appearance. In 2019, Ryan has 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions to go along with a 92.2 QBR. He is now 34 years old but has shown signs of being able to play for years to come. Atlanta has plenty of other problems to figure out other than their quarterback.
This should not be a 3-9 team, plain and simple. The Falcons have talent on offense. That is usually enough to win in this league, at least in the regular season. They have not done that. Yes, their defense has been bad. Atlanta currently ranks 23rd in total defense in the NFL. For this team, it begins with coaching.
Article Continues BelowHow Dan Quinn still has a job is mind-boggling. It does not take a genius to see that he is a bad football coach. There are some coaches who are not meant to run the show, and Quinn is one of them. After appearing in a Super Bowl, a coach is usually given leeway but Quinn should have run out of his awhile ago. Especially after having a hand in blowing a 28-3 lead.
The question the Falcons need to ask is if they move on from Ryan, where are they going? They should not go into full rebuilding mode just yet with the offensive talent they have. Ryan is a proven, 12-year vet who will be able to work with whatever new head coach or offensive coordinator is brought in. He still has the physical ability to move around in the pocket and make every throw on the field.
There are plenty of teams right now who would take a 34-year old Ryan to the final years of his career.
Atlanta definitely has to make some changes but their quarterback is not one.
