According to the team's official website, this is Childress' second stint with the Bears. He was their senior offensive consultant during last year's offseason and training camp. He and head coach Matt Nagy worked together for five years with the Kansas City Chiefs.
More specifically, Childress and Nagy joined forces from 2013 to 2017. During that span, the former served as the Chiefs' spread game analyst, offensive coordinator, and assistant head coach.
For his part, Nagy was Kansas City's quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2015. He also served as the team's offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017:

When the Bears first hired Childress, Nagy referred to him as his “partner in crime.” The Chicago head coach also sung Childress' praises to the Chicago Sun-Times' Patrick Finley in January 2018:
Every day he was telling stories and being there for me, being there with me.
He has a special place in my heart, and I just thank him from the bottom of my heart.
The Bears finished with a gaudy 12-4 (.750) win-loss record at the conclusion of the 2018 NFL season. They also made their first postseason appearance in eight years, but they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Despite their rise back to prominence, the Bears finished just 21st in the NFL in total offense last season (5,502 net yards). Childress' extensive track record (he has been coaching in the NFL since 1999) should help Nagy and Co. pile up more yardage in the 2019 NFL season.
