The Chicago Bears nabbed their hopeful quarterback of the future last month in Ohio State standout Justin Fields. A lot of the speculation early on since drafting the 22-year-old is if they should start him over Andy Dalton or let Fields learn the ropes and sit for the first handful of games in his rookie year.

Former Bears QB Jay Cutler, who knows just how difficult it can be to play in the Windy City, especially with the intense fanbase, gave his honest take on how the Bears should handle Fields.

“I wouldn't play the kid to start,” Jay Cutler said this week on Waddle & Silvy on WMVP-AM 100, via the Chicago Tribune. “That's where I'd start. I'd let him watch. I think it's just a tough spot to just throw someone out there, especially in Chicago. And I think Andy is more than serviceable. I think they can win games with Andy and kind of pull the ship along until [Fields] is ready.”

The Bears also play the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1 who feature a fierce defense with the likes of Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. It wouldn't be the warmest welcome for Fields into the NFL, that's for sure.

Chicago has time to nurture and develop their new franchise quarterback. While Bears fans hated that the team signed Dalton, his experience and track record could be valuable for Fields and of course, to win some games.

There's little doubt we'll see Fields sooner rather than later, but with Cutler being a former first-rounder who went through the exact same scenario, he clearly thinks it's best the Bears take their sweet time with Justin Fields. After all, there's still a bitter taste from the failed project of Mitch Trubisky.
