The Chicago Bears have made it abundantly clear that they are not entirely comfortable with Mitchell Trubisky under center heading into 2020, as they swung a trade to acquire fellow quarterback Nick Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars last month.
Of course, there are no guarantees for Foles.
There will surely be a quarterback competition between Trubisky and Foles in training camp, and Foles wanted to make sure his relationship with Trubisky gets off on the right foot.
For that reason, Foles reached out to his new Bears' teammate almost immediately after the trade:
“The big thing was just to introduce myself, just to say that I wanted to introduce (myself) and I’m excited to be your teammate, I’m excited to work with you,” said Foles, according to Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune. “Obviously heard great things about him. Just looking forward to the opportunity. Really just starting on the right foot.”
Foles added that a healthy competition between the two will be important for the Bears:
“Competition and all that is great, but it can be unhealthy with a team that’s filled with a bunch of egos,” said Foles. “Trust me, I get the situation. Mitch has been there for a couple years, Mitch has been the quarterback, and I’m respectful to that situation. I’m going to go there and just be the best support system I can for him, whatever we’re doing.”
As of now, most have Foles penciled in as the starter for 2020, but given that he has never started a full season in his NFL career, he is just as big of a question mark as Trubisky going into next season.
It will certainly be interesting to see how things unfold in the Windy City.
