A heated exchange marred the Week 8 matchup featuring the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Bears wideout Javon Wims abruptly threw a punch on Saints cornerback Chauncey Gardner-Johnson which led to his ejection. He will face a possible suspension for his actions, as per NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport.
While other disqualifications this year have not resulted in suspensions, the difference is those actions occurred in the course of normal play. This from Javon Wims did not. Possible suspension coming. https://t.co/VFdwxLleAi

The unnecessary play occurred early in the third quarter of the game where Wims broke off a route and approached Gardner-Johnson from behind. Wims threw a sucker punch and slapped the cornerback on the facemask. Another Saints cornerback in Janoris Jenkins joined the fray and took Wims to the ground before members of both teams gathered to break up the fight.

The matchup ended on a 26-23 win by the Saints in overtime to improve to a 5-2 record while the loss dragged the Bears to a 5-3 tally.
Despite his actions, the game against the Bears wasn't the first occasion where Gardner-Johnson got involved in an altercation. He also instigated a spat with Saints teammate Michael Thomas who punched him back during a team practice in October. The Pro Bowl wide receiver was then handed a one-game suspension from New Orleans head coach Sean Payton in Week 5. He has missed all but one game this season, primarily due to a nagging hamstring injury.
Wims and the rest of the Bears will await for further updates from the league regarding the receiver's actions.
