Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green recently went to see a foot specialist following the toe injury he suffered in Week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There was some concern that surgery might have been necessary to fix the injury.

However, head coach Marvin Lewis has said Green will not, in fact, need surgery and that “he’ll be fine,” per Jay Morrison of The Athletic.

Lewis didn’t even rule Green out of the Bengals’ Week 10 matchup against the New Orleans Saints per Morrison, but it seems highly unlikely that he plays.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says Green is not expected to play in Week 10 and will be week-to-week after that, while Adam Schefter of ESPN went so far as to say Green would miss at least two games before his foot is even re-evaluated, which could mean a longer layoff.

Even if Green misses a little more than two games, though, it’s still a better scenario than losing him for the season, which likely would’ve happened had he needed surgery.

But with Green expected to miss time, the Bengals will need a lot of people to step up. Their offense is already missing playmakers like Giovani Bernard and Tyler Eifert, as well as John Ross.

Tyler Boyd is now the team’s lone reliable wide receiver with Green out injured. The third-year wideout is having a breakout year with 49 catches for 620 yards and five touchdowns already through eight games. With Green gone, he and running back Joe Mixon will need to carry a significant amount of the load for the Bengals offense.
