By now, you have probably concluded that we won't be seeing A.J. Green in 2019. On Tuesday, we heard it straight from the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver's mouth: he probably won't be playing in either of the final two games.
Green suffered an ankle injury early in training camp and was initially supposed to be out for a couple of months at most, but it turned into a season-long issue.
The good news is that Green's doctor, Dr. Robert Anderson, said he would be just fine over the long haul, which was music to his ears:
“I feel good just getting confirmation from him. Knowing there’s no effect on my future,” Green said, according to Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' team website. “I never thought it would be that bad that I could never play at a high level. Just hearing him saying it made me feel a lot better.”
The last two years have been rough for Green.
Article Continues BelowA toe injury limited him to just eight games in 2018, which ended his streak of seven straight Pro Bowl appearances since he entered the NFL back in 2011.
But it looks like Green will be able to return to the field in 2020:
“It’s finally turned the corner. It’s been feeling better and better each week,” Green said. “There were no setbacks. The plan was to go up there (to meet Anderson). He liked the way it looked. He said it’s only a matter of time. It’s not (ready) to play a game, but he was like, it’s a good thing I didn’t rush this thing.”
Green, who has spent his entire professional career in Cincinnati, is set to be a free agent this coming offseason.
