Baker Mayfield's injured right (throwing) hand does not seem to be hampering his ability to play. The Cleveland Browns second-year quarterback is expected to play on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals; Friday's positive update reaffirms that.
On Friday, Mayfield was throwing without a wrap or glove on his right hand, according to Jeff Risdon of The Browns Wire.
Mayfield injured his hand shortly before halftime of the Browns' Week 13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. After Garrett Gilbert briefly came into the game, Mayfield was on the gridiron in the second with a glove and tape on his hand.
Mayfield has downplayed the injury. Earlier in the week, he said he would play on Sunday, despite being withheld from throwing drills. Why? “Mama didn't raise a wuss,” as he said on Wednesday, via the team's official website.
In the loss, Mayfield went 18 of 32 passing for 196 yards, a touchdown and an interception, suitable for a 71.9 passer rating.
On the season, Mayfield has thrown for 2,917 yards, 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on a 60% completion, equating to a 79.9 passer rating. He has not missed any games throughout 2019, going 5-7 as a starter.
There were concerns that Mayfield would not play on Sunday, despite him saying he will. However, those concerns seem to be alleviated with the most recent update on his throwing hand.
Now, all the concerns head to the Browns picking up a win on Sunday. Though a one-win team, the Bengals remain a division rival. If Cleveland wants a spot in the playoffs, they must win-out.
