It took a while, but the Cleveland Browns have finally locked up the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft. The Browns signed rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield to his rookie contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Mayfield inked his four-year deal worth $32.68 million fully guaranteed. He also got a $21.85 million signing bonus, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
There was much speculation about who the Browns would select with the top pick. Fellow quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Josh Allen were strongly linked with Cleveland early in the process. However, Mayfield’s name emerged as the leading contender in the days before the draft, and he eventually was their pick.
Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy while starring for Oklahoma in his final year in college. He completed 262 of 369 passes for 4,340 yards for 41 touchdowns and five interceptions last season for the Sooners. He also ran for 310 yards and five more touchdowns.
The Browns begin training camp on Thursday. Tyrod Taylor is widely expected to be the team’s starting quarterback this season, which leaves Mayfield and veteran Drew Stanton in competition for the primary backup spot.
But while the Browns have Mayfield locked up, they’re not done yet. Their No. 4 overall pick, cornerback Denzel Ward, remains one of just five draft picks who still haven’t signed their rookie deals ahead of training camp: Ward, Darnold, Allen, Roquan Smith, and Dante Pettis.
