The Dallas Cowboys find themselves in an awkward position with franchise QB Dak Prescott. The two sides have not agreed to a contract extension and time is running out to negotiate a new deal. This has led to speculation that Prescott may want to move on to a new team after the 2024 NFL season. His recent appearance sporting an MLB jersey has added fuel to the fire.
Dak Prescott stole the spotlight when he attended Tight End University on Monday. Prescott was seen wearing a New York Yankees jersey, which many fans interpreted as some kind of signal that the QB wants to play in New York. Specifically, the Cowboys' division rival New York Giants.

In 2024, Prescott will play on the final year of a four-year, $160 million contract he signed in 2021. What is unique about this situation is that Prescott holds all of the leverage. There is a no-trade clause in his contract, preventing Dallas from shipping Prescott somewhere against his wishes. The Cowboys also cannot use the franchise tag on Prescott, further limiting their options. It seems that Prescott may be in no rush to work out a new deal.
The QB contract market has already risen this offseason with Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence both inking massive contract extensions in the $50 million average per year range. Prescott could push for $60 million from the Cowboys, considering his incredible leverage. If Dallas is unwilling to pay, it is likely that Prescott hits the open market as one of the most desirable free agents in a long time.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy praises Dak Prescott for having “his best offseason program”
It seems that Dallas is trying everything it can to coax Prescott into staying with the Cowboys, including flattery.

Last week, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy heaped praise on his franchise QB, claiming that he is having one of his best offseasons ever.
“He's had really good offseason programs the whole time,” McCarthy said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “But this atmosphere that we practice in with the quarterback and receivers has really hit the mark. I’ve been very impressed with the quality of work.”
Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are two of the best players on the entire team, so it's no surprise that McCarthy would be impressed by these two position groups.
Prescott opened up about his competitive nature after he was asked to respond to McCarthy's comments.
“I talk about it every offseason. Any chance we talk, my focus is always getting better. Getting better overall in every way that I can, every aspect of my game, making sure I push the other people around me,” Prescott said. “Mike’s comments are the result of us doing that from the time the offseason began, from before the offseason began with the team activities, us guys getting together. Really, the growth in my play and the jump I’m making in the second year in his offense as well, being more comfortable with the footwork. The receivers around me, their second year in it, they’re more comfortable, they’re more confident.”
It will be interesting to watch the Cowboys in 2024. The result of Dallas' season could impact Prescott's decision on where to play in 2025.
