Anyone who aspires to own the Dallas Cowboys one day needs to have a deep pocket – a very deep one. According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, it will take no cheaper than $10 billion to convince him to sell the NFL franchise he’s been controlling for almost three full decades to this date.
During a recent interview with Bloomberg, Jones reiterated that he has no plans of selling the Cowboys, but also named a price tag for his team (h/t Dallas Morning News).
How much would you accept to sell the Cowboys?
If I had to sell the team tomorrow I wouldn't accept anything less than $10 billion. But, I don't want to imply that I would take $10 billion for them. The Cowboys are just not for sale. They're a long-term asset and my immediate family — which has been a part of making them what they are today — they'll own the Cowboys long after I'm gone.
Jerry Jones purchased the rights to the Cowboys in 1989 for only $150 million. Since then, the franchise has seen a meteoric rise in terms of its value. According to Forbes.com’s latest team valuation in September, the Cowboys are worth $5 billion.
For all the money the Cowboys have, however, they can’t seem to buy their own way to a Super Bowl win over the past 23 years. Since taking home the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1995, the Cowboys have only made the playoffs nine times.
