Quarterback Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have apparently hit the ground running in contract negotiations this offseason, with significant progress being made on a new deal as the franchise tag deadline approaches. Prescott is reportedly looking for a massive new deal in the annual range of Patrick Mahomes' contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the deadline for the Cowboys to place the franchise tag on quarterback Dak Prescott a week away, multiple sources said Tuesday night talks for a new contract are progressing. One source characterized discussions as “more productive than they have been” in previous months.

Dallas only has until next Tuesday to place Dak Prescott under the franchise tag, which would allow him to earn $37.7 million in 2021. If the Cowboys don't sign Prescott to a new deal and don't tag him, the two-time Pro Bowler would then become a free agent on March 17.

Tagging Prescott wouldn't mean the end of long-term contract negotiations, which would continue until July. If they couldn't come to an agreement by then, Prescott would eventually have to play under the franchise tag for the 2021 NFL season.

The Louisiana native was off to a strong start in his 2020 campaign, but that was derailed by a season-ending ankle injury in Week 5 against the New York Giants. His extended absence led to the eventual downfall of the Cowboys, as they concluded the season with a 6-10 record for the third spot in the lowly NFC East.

Even after concluding a disappointing campaign, Prescott still hinted at his desire to remain with the Cowboys moving forward. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys would be wise to lock in a deal in the near future in order to secure Dak Prescott's services and be more competitive for the years to come.
